Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) = is a type of diesel fuel for compression ignition engines. It’s the technical name for the “diesel” you buy for trucks, buses, generators, heavy equipment.
Despite the name, it’s NOT gasoline. “Gas oil” is an old refinery term for middle distillate. Gasoline = petrol/spark ignition. Totally different.
AGO SPECS- TYPICAL GLOBAL GRADE:
• Type: Distillate fuel for diesel engines Same family as D2, EN590.
• Density: @15°C** 820 – 870 kg/m³ Heavier than gasoline, lighter than BLCO.
• Color: Clear & bright, straw/golden Can be dyed red/green for tax use.
• Viscosity: @40°C** 1.6 – 5.5 cSt Thicker than Jet A-1, thinner than D6.
• Flash Point: 55°C min, usually 66°C+ Safer than gasoline.
• Sulfur: Varies by region: 500ppm “500ppm diesel” → 50ppm “AGO 50ppm” → 10ppm “ULSD/EN590”. Nigeria Dangote now produces 50ppm AGO.
• Cetane Index/Number: 47-51 min Ignition quality for diesel engines.
• Cloud Point: 4°C to 38°F max Gels in cold weather.
In West Africa, AGO = Diesel at filling stations. Dangote Refinery now produces AGO 50ppm which meets Euro IV standards. “500ppm AGO” was the old standard.
Gasoil/AGO historically meant high-sulfur diesel for industry. Today most trade corridors require AGO/D2 to meet the same 10ppm ULSD spec as EN590. So “dirty AGO” is mostly gone.
